1. Vitamin E
Naturally found in: Avocados, spinach, almonds and sunflower seeds
One of the most widely known supplements for hair-fall, this vitamin is a powerful antioxidant. According to a study by Dr Lim Ai Beoy, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Pulau, Malaysia, there is a connection between hair-loss and oxidative stress. And the subjects that religiously stuck to their vitamin E treatment experienced a 34.5% increase in hair growth in just eight months.

2. Zinc
Naturally found in: Spinach, beef, wheat germ, lentils, oysters and pumpkin seeds

This essential mineral makes sure that the oil glands surrounding your hair follicles function properly while also aiding tissue growth. A study conducted by Dr Tadashi Karashima, Department of Dermatology, Kurume University School of Medicine, and Kurume University Institute of Cutaneous Cell Biology, Kurume, Japan, states that the administration of zinc for zinc deficiency-related alopecia may recover appropriate activities of metalloenzymes, hedgehog signaling, and immunomodulation, all of which are required for normal control of hair growth cycle.

3. Vitamin C
Naturally found in: Indian gooseberry, strawberry, guava, and almost all kinds of citrus
Ever heard of collagen? Yes, the stuff that keeps your skin firm and supple is equally necessary for hair growth. And your body needs vitamin C to produce lots of it. Along with boosting collagen production, vitamin C also helps your body in absorbing iron—another mineral that’s good for hair growth. Since humans can’t manufacture this vitamin on their own, one has to turn towards artificial supplements and/or fruits for nourishment.

4. Protein
Naturally found in: Eggs, lean meats, poultry, seafood, lentils, beans, whole grains and nuts

Our hair is entirely made up of keratin, which is basically protein in a different form. A study by Dr H H Zhang, Institute of Special Animal and Plant Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Changchun, China, states that protein deficiency can decrease hair growth and even lead to permanent hair loss. Make sure to increase your protein intake if you’re experiencing an onset of hair loss.

5. Vitamin B12 and other B Vitamins
Naturally found in: Whole grains, almonds, meat, fish, seafood and leafy greens
India is home to the world’s largest vegetarian population, and even though that might sound progressive, it leaves a lot of us with a vitamin B12 deficiency—a vitamin that is only found in animal products. But with several over-the-counter options available, it has become easy to include this hair strengthening vitamin to our regimen. Vitamin B also comes in the form of ‘Biotin’ which aids hair growth and also leaves you with healthier nails and skin.
