Coconuts, the sizable seeds of coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), thrive in tropical climates. These seeds are encased in tough, brown, fibrous husks that protect the nutritious meat within.  According to a 2020 study published by the Journal of Cardiovascular Development and Disease, a significant portion of the fat found in coconut meat consists of saturated fat. Nevertheless, the predominant type of saturated fat in coconut meat is composed of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), also known as medium-chain fatty acids.

There has been a steady rise in the consumption of coconut pulp, especially during the summer. Coconut cream, the creamy content within the coconut, is a treasure trove of essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. It boasts a rich supply of carbohydrates, protein, copper, and manganese. Copper plays a pivotal role in promoting healthy bone development and supporting heart health, while manganese contributes to enhanced enzyme activity and efficient fat metabolism. With the rising popularity of coconut oil and coconut milk, individuals often inquire about the various uses of coconut meat and its potential health advantages.

Benefits of Tender Coconut

Tender coconut, often referred to as green coconut or young coconut, is the fresh, immature stage of the coconut fruit before it fully matures. It is well-known for its refreshing taste and numerous health benefits. Here are some of the key advantages of consuming tender coconut:

1. Provides hydration

Tender coconut water is a natural and effective way to stay hydrated. It is packed with electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium, making it an excellent choice for rehydration after exercise or on hot days.

2. It is low in calories

Tender coconut water is relatively low in calories compared to most commercial sports drinks and sodas, making it a healthier option for those looking to manage their weight.

3. Rich in nutrients

It contains a variety of essential nutrients, including vitamins (like vitamin C and B-complex vitamins), minerals (like calcium, iron, and phosphorus), and amino acids. These nutrients contribute to overall health and vitality.

4. Good for digestive health

Tender coconut water is known for its digestive benefits. It can help ease indigestion and alleviate acid reflux. It contains fibre and natural enzymes that aid in digestion and promote a healthy gut.

5. Helps to balance electrolyte

It helps maintain the body's electrolyte balance, making it a valuable choice for rehydration after strenuous physical activity or illness, especially when there is fluid loss.

6. Aids in kidney health

Some studies suggest that tender coconut water may help prevent the formation of kidney stones by reducing the risk of crystal formation and promoting urine flow.

7. Regulates blood pressure

The potassium content in tender coconut water may assist in regulating blood pressure. It helps counteract the sodium in the diet, potentially reducing the risk of hypertension.

8. May reduce risk of chronic illness

It contains antioxidants, which can help combat free radicals and oxidative stress, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases and ageing.

9. May help manage weight

Tender coconut water is fat-free and low in sugar. It can be a beneficial addition to a weight management plan as it provides a sense of fullness and reduces the temptation to consume high-calorie, sugary beverages.

10. Promotes skin health

The vitamins and minerals in tender coconut water can contribute to healthy skin. It may help in reducing acne, promoting a youthful complexion, and providing a natural glow.

11. Boosts immunity

The presence of vitamins and minerals supports a robust immune system, helping the body fend off infections and illnesses.

12. Acts as a natural diuretic

It acts as a natural diuretic, which can be useful for individuals with edema (fluid retention).

Easy Steps

01

In a mixing bowl, combine the coconut milk and full-fat coconut milk. Adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more or less sweetened coconut milk.

02

If you want to enhance the coconut flavour and texture, you can also add shredded coconut to the mixture. Stir well to combine.

03

If you'd like a hint of vanilla flavour, add the vanilla extract or maple syrup and mix it in.

Ingredients List
  • 1 can of coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup of full-fat coconut milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract or maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup of shredded coconut
  • Popsicle moulds and sticks
04

Carefully pour the coconut mixture into your popsicle moulds. Leave a small space at the top to allow for expansion as the popsicles freeze.

05

If your popsicle moulds have covers, place them on top. If not, you can cover the moulds with aluminium foil and insert popsicle sticks into each cavity, making sure they stand upright.

06

Place the popsicle moulds in the freezer and let them freeze for about 4-6 hours, or until completely solid. The exact time may vary depending on your freezer's temperature and the size of your popsicles.

07

Once the coconut popsicles are fully frozen, remove them from the moulds by running warm water over the mould for a few seconds to loosen them. Gently pull the popsicles out by the sticks. Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade coconut popsicles!
