Herbal Drinks to Boost Digestion

Fennel tea

According to a 2021 study published by the Open Access Journal for Life and Environment research, fennel seeds stimulate digestive enzyme secretion that boost digestion.

Fennel tea contains compounds like anethole, which can help relax gastrointestinal tract muscles, reducing bloating and gas. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that may soothe digestive discomfort.

  • Recipe: Crush a tablespoon of fennel seeds and steep in hot water for 5-7 minutes. Strain and enjoy.

Chamomile tea

According to various studies including a 2011 study published by Spandidos Publications, chamomile is a digestive relaxant and can be used to treat various gastrointestinal disturbances including flatulence, indigestion, diarrhoea, motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting.

  • To make chamomile tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers in hot water for 5-10 minutes. Strain and enjoy, optionally sweetening with honey or adding a slice of lemon. If you don’t have chamomile flowers, you can use chamomile tea readily available in the market.

Licorice Root Tea

As per the study published by Plants, licorice root extract may be used to help relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), such as acid reflux, heartburn, and indigestion

In traditional Chinese medicine, “nine out of ten formulae contain licorice”; it is considered one of the essential herbal medications for reducing toxicity and increasing the efficacy of other herbal medicines when used together.

  • Steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried licorice root in 1 cup of boiling water for 5-10 minutes to make licorice root tea.

Chia Seed Tonic

A 2018 study published by the Journal of Functional Foods has linked chia seeds to improving the growth of gut flora Enterococcus spp and Lactobacillus spp, which are beneficial for gut health.

Chia seeds deliver both soluble and insoluble fibre which together support healthy digestion. In just one tablespoon of chia seeds, you’ll find approximately 4 grams of fiber—14 percent of the daily recommended intake of chia seeds, so you get all that healthy fibre when you drink up.

  • To make a chia seed tonic, mix 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with 1 cup of water or juice, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes until the seeds swell.

Ginger tea

According to a 2020 review study in the journal Nutrients, ginger helps with digestion by encouraging GI function and emptying, while also stabilising overall GI motility so it's not over- or under-active. Gastrointestinal (GI) motility refers to the contractions of the smooth muscles in the digestive tract, which facilitate the movement of food and waste through the system. It is crucial for digestion, absorption of nutrients, and the elimination of waste.

Apart from being well-known for its ability to quell nausea, ginger has also been found to help with digestion. The presence of the active compounds such as gingerols and shogaols promote gastric emptying, enhance digestive enzyme activity, and help reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Peel and slice a 1-inch piece of fresh ginger root. Boil 2 cups of water in a pot, then add the ginger slices. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Strain the tea into a cup and add honey or lemon to taste, if desired. Enjoy it warm for soothing effects.

Cumin Water (Jeera Water)

A 2023 study published by the International Journal of Medical Research and Health Sciences, the presence of compounds like thymol and other essential oils in cumin seeds stimulates the secretion of enzymes that facilitate digestion. Jeera water also increases the release of bile from the liver, which helps the body to digest fat and other nutrients in the gut.

Jeera water improves digestion by breaking down food and absorbing its good nutrients. It also reduces bloating and flatulence. Packed with antioxidants, cumin water can help eliminate harmful oxygen radicals from your body, giving your heart and metabolism maximum fighting chance to keep you feeling great.

  • Recipe: Add 1-2 teaspoons of cumin seeds (jeera) to 2 cups of water. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer until the water is reduced to about half its original quantity. Strain and drink it warm, preferably on an empty stomach for digestive benefits.
