As a matter of fact, there's no need to experience any guilt when indulging in chocolate. However, it's important to choose wisely by opting for either cacao or a high-quality chocolate bar crafted from cocoa and cocoa butter. The higher the cocoa percentage, the better the health benefits. The dark chocolate is rich in colour and bitter in taste which is usually prepared from cocoa solids (70-85 per cent), sugar and cocoa butter. Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content is a good source of minerals such as iron, magnesium, copper, and manganese. It also provides fibre and antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols.

While dark chocolate has potential health benefits, it should still be consumed in moderation. It is high in calories and fat, so excessive consumption can lead to weight gain and other health issues. Additionally, not all chocolate products are created equal, and those with added sugars or less cocoa content may not offer the same benefits as high-quality dark chocolate.

Reasons To Eat More Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate holds significant importance due to its potential health benefits and various positive effects on the body. Here are some key reasons why dark chocolate is considered important:

1. Boosts mood

Chocolate is widely enjoyed for its rich and indulgent taste, which can bring pleasure and satisfaction. Consuming chocolate can stimulate the release of endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones, leading to a temporary mood boost and a sense of well-being. According to a 2022 study issued in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, consuming dark chocolate (85 per cent cocoa) boosts mood and reduces negative effects.

2. Source of antioxidants

Dark chocolate, in particular, is a good source of antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols. These compounds help protect the body from oxidative stress caused by harmful free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, certain cancers, and neurodegenerative conditions.

3. Reduces risk of heart conditions

A 2020 study issued by the European Society of Cardiology suggests that moderate consumption of dark chocolate may have positive effects on cardiovascular health. The flavonoids in chocolate can improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and enhance the function of blood vessels, thereby supporting heart health.

4. Boosts cognitive function and brain health

Some research indicates that the flavonoids in chocolate could have positive effects on brain function. A 2020 study published in the journal Nutrients shows that regular consumption of dark chocolate has been associated with improved cognitive performance, including memory, attention, better reaction time, and problem-solving skills. It may also help protect against age-related cognitive decline.

5. May reduce the risk of diabetes

A 2023 study by Harvard University shows that eating dark chocolate flavanols in chocolate can increase insulin sensitivity in short term studies; in the long run this could reduce the risk of diabetes in people.

Easy Steps

01

Take a heatproof bowl and put it over a pan of simmering water. Put chocolates in it and melt, making sure the bowl doesn’t directly touch the water. Once all chocolates are melted, allow it to cool for 5-10 mins, then add in the yoghurt.

02

Whisk the egg whites until you see stiff peaks. Add sugar and beat until stiff again. Fold the whites into the chocolate mix – loosen the mixture first with a spoonful of egg white, then carefully fold in the rest, keeping as much air as possible.

03

Put berries into small glasses or ramekins, then divide mousse on top. Chill in the fridge until set.
